We have had a very busy and enjoyable weekend at Barbury. It is always a first class event and one that is always very much enjoyed by owners.
I had three novices on Friday, and Reinstated had a very convincing win in his Novice section. He led the dressage and scored 21 with a very good test, and then jumped a superb double clear, finishing well inside the time to win very comfortably. He is certainly growing up and is benefiting from having three consecutive runs.
The ground was good, but a bit firm on Friday before heaving overnight rain. I thought the novice track was very educational and it is always beautifully presented.
The Soapdodger finished fourth in his class, he did another good test which was very satisfactory, and jumped a double clear very happily finishing just 2 seconds over the optimum time. This is the first time that I have pushed these two novice horses on a bit and they both coped well.
Ramdam de Mons had another outing in the Novice, and performed well with a 31 dressage and clear show jumping, he didn’t run cross country but is hoping to run at Tweseldown tomorrow.
In the 2*, Top Biats had a fantastic win which was really exciting. Not only was it a very competitive section with 102 starters, but he also got his Lyon d’Angers 7yo championship qualification. I have to say he went brilliantly in all phases, he led the dressage on a score of 35.8, show jumping a super clear in a very tricky small arena on a track which caused plenty of trouble. He then flew around the cross country, all the direct routes, incurring 7.4 time faults to win by 4 marks. He felt that he was really growing up and never felt green for a second.
Luxury FH was having his first run since Tattersalls and I was also delighted with him, he felt that he had grown up a lot scoring 46 in the dressage with a nice relaxed test. He then rolled a pole show jumping, just having a bit of a spook, and was very polished on the cross country, just incurring 14 time faults.
Parklane Hawk and Bay My Hero just did the dressage in the 2* as was the plan, they scored 45 and 48, with some nice work, but very much needing the outing!
On Saturday afternoon we had some fun entertainment with the Injured Jockey Fund’s inter-hunt relay, where the winning Hunt took on a team of Show Jumpers, Eventers and Jockeys. The competition was a fantastic idea and drew a large crowd in the main arena, where the riders had to select a suitable hunter to run the event on the day, and then jump a course of show jumps against another team in a relay, finishing up with a mad dash through the water jump, down the bank and over the last. It was very annoying to be beaten by the jockeys, and of course we have got our excuses but we finished third, hopefully raising a decent sum of money for what is a fantastic cause.
Nigel Bunter is such a generous host, and he and his team must be congratulated for another first class Barbury. The atmosphere is always brilliant, and public turnout always boosts the great experience.
