Day 2 at Aston was 66% successful. It was a very good day for Eventing and the course overall rode very well, Mark Phillips asked good questions and I think many horses will have benefited a lot from their round.
Grafennacht kicked the day off, she jumped a wonderful clear show jumping, felt really good. I thought I was going pretty fast and was very surprised to get 0.4 time fault. She then flew around the cross country, the ground was pretty decent so I let her bowl on in a good rhythm. I was never going to race her around for a result and she got 12 time penalties, but I was very satisfied with her day.
Little Fire had a fence down which was a bit unnecessary, perhaps I could say he wasn't quite straight or was slightly spooking at the judges box, but I don't want to make up excuses. He then flew round the cross country and gave me a very enjoyable ride.
Georgisaurous was last on. He had started the day in a little bit of a stressed out mode, we had a couple of show jumps down which is not like him, but there were various minor reasons. But on the cross country he showed his greenness and lack of recent runs, had a couple of irritating glance offs and I retired towards the end of the course. The run won't have done him any harm really but it was not what I was expecting, so I guess it is back to the drawing board and he has got one more chance of qualifying for Bicton, at Houghton.
The excitement of the day was Kazu securing his qualification for Tokyo with Vinci de la Vigne. After producing two very decent tests yesterday he jumped superb double clears and was pretty good on the clock as well. Vinci de la Vigne and Bernadette Utopia looked great and I think he is very happy with his day's work. It was good to see the JRA London team supporting Kazu, it was great they could come and watch and they really appreciated what the day involved.
Aston as usual did a top class job, we all know how hard Nigel and his team work to make things run so well. The riders really appreciated both the show jumping and the cross country tracks, and every effort had been put into ensuring good going.
