It was a very good day for Secret Night, he show jumped a clear and went really well cross country with just time 0.8 faults, and held onto his lead.
Little Fire did well in his first 2* with a super clear SJ and a great ride XC. He ate up the course and made it feel like a novice. He has now got his qualification for Lion d'Angers if we want to go there.
Top Biats also show jumped a very good clear and did a lovely clear cross country, but very sadly he got 4.6 time faults and dropped down to sixth. The top few were very tight so his time faults were expensive. However, after the disappointment of Tattersalls the only important things was that he enjoyed himself and went well, and he did just that.
Chilli was having a quiet outing, I had decided not to risk running him cross country because I thought he wouldn’t see much, however the show jumping was a very good round for him. He unfortunately had one down which will have hopefully woken him up well. I was overall very pleased with how he jumped and how he felt.
Hector Payne was riding Raffles again in the 2* and after a slightly disappointing dressage he did a superb double clear. Having not been out since Tattersalls he was quite alive, but he still managed to jump very well and he gave Hector an excellent feel cross country. His next run will hopefully be his first Advanced at Aston Le Walls.
Sunday
On the Sunday it was a quieter day with just Cool Mountain doing the ERM class, but he had to show jump early. The show jumping course was certainly a serious track but it wasn’t the most technically difficult. Happily he jumped a brilliant clear round, one of his best and moved up the order into 10th place. Teresa Stopford-Sackville his owner and I felt it was worth running him cross country, and we had the whole of the CIC3* to watch to show us how the course should be done. He was very happy to be running and gave me a fantastic ride. I pushed him on a bit as I felt it would be good practice to have a proper ride, and he managed to get round with 2 time faults, which was excellent. It was pretty quick but slower than a few. However happily he moved up into 7th place, so the whole exercise was made very worthwhile.
I think the ERM class went down at Barbury as a big success. There was some fantastic coverage with some very well placed cameras – with one even working out how fast we were going. The podium at the end was a great idea, and was well received by the public as they were fully engaged with all the rider interviews with Alice Plunkett. Let’s hope this is a good sign for things to come. The next ERM class is at Gatcombe at the beginning of August, followed by Blair at the end of August.
